Codex Auto-review: How to Enable It and What Is Free
Sources checked October 7, 2026 (Shanghai). Based on official instructions; not a cross-platform hands-on test.
What became free?
In the Day 2.1 announcement, Tibo said Auto-review is free for users signed in with ChatGPT and does not draw usage from their plan. That applies to the review feature, not the entire coding task, and it is not a quota reset.
What problem does it solve?
Long tasks can pause at permission requests. Auto-review uses a separate agent to assess actions that cross a permission boundary, reducing approval interruptions. It is not a code-quality review of the finished work.
Enable it in the desktop app
- Open Codex Settings.
- Go to General → Permissions.
- Select Auto-review, then try a small task and check the result.
The setting path comes from Tibo’s follow-up instructions. View source ↗
What if I cannot find the setting?
Check that you are signed in with ChatGPT, then look under General and Permissions. Settings can vary by client; the steps here are the official desktop instructions, not a mobile walkthrough. Consult the official documentation below if the option is missing. Full Access is not an equivalent substitute.
Can I leave a task running?
Begin with a small, clearly scoped task whose results you can check. State which files may change and what completion means. Auto-review can reduce interruptions; it does not guarantee task completion or prevent every unwanted action.
Does this reset my quota?
This is a product improvement in the 28-day challenge. Check your Usage panel for account limits and the separate reset history for additional reset announcements.
